Louvered roof or solid cover: which one for a valley patio
An Equinox louvered roof opens and closes. A solid cover does not. In a place with two opposite seasons, when the extra is worth it, and when it is not.
What a solid cover does.
A solid Alumawood cover is a fixed aluminum roof. It gives complete shade, sheds a downpour, and takes a fan and lights. For a patio you use in the afternoon and evening from May to September, it does the whole job at the lowest price of the two.
What a louvered roof adds.
Equinox louvers rotate on a motor. Open, the patio is a pergola with the sky above it and sun on a January afternoon, which is the best afternoon the valley has. Angled, you get filtered shade that follows the sun. Closed, it is a solid roof with a gutter built into the beam. You are buying the ability to change your mind by the season, and by the hour.
When the louvered roof is worth it.
- You use the patio in winter and want the sun, not just summer shade
- The patio faces the Strip, the mountains or a view you do not want to close in
- It is the main outdoor room of the house and you will use it year round
- You want lighting, heating and misters built into a frame designed for them
When the solid cover is the right answer.
- The patio is mostly for summer afternoons and evenings
- It already has some shade from the house
- The budget is better spent on size than on movement
- You want the simplest structure with the fewest parts
